Just as many people today are looking to put away cigarettes for good as are picking them up for the first time.  This is a good thing, and many health professionals have high hopes that a day will come when tobacco as a substance which is used by many people is a thing of the past.  To drive the point home, there is a number of smoking health risks a person should know.

Smoking as an activity consumes the wallets and attention of more people than we care to count.  Workplace productivity is negatively affected because many people have to take several or more smoke breaks in a shift or a workday just to get the habit satisfied, if only for a short period of time.  What then, are some of the smoking health risks a person should know, in addition to the monetary impact?

For starters, cigarette smoking is a prime contributor to a number of pulmonary diseases.  These include emphysema.  Also, certain cancers, including lung and mouth or oral cancers occur more often in smokers.  In fact, the list of cancers which a person risks contracting in greater percentages when he or she smokes is long, and it keeps getting longer as science identifies more downsides to smoking with the passage of time.  So, two of the smoking health risks a person should know involves emphysema, and cancer in all its harmful forms.

Another of the smoking health risks a person should know is in the matter of heart disease.  Since 1966, when the Surgeon General of the United States issued the first definitive opinion on the risks of cigarettes and the disease processes which smoking can end up causing, heart disease has been at the top of the list of bad things which can happen to a smoker.  Hundreds of thousands of people in the U.S. alone die every year from heart disease which has been brought on by cigarette smoking.

Taking the time to understand a few of the smoking health risks a person should know may help to finally convince a cigarette user that it’s time to quit tobacco once and for all.  So many illnesses occurring around the world every year are caused by smoking that it’s a wonder why anybody would take up the habit at all.
